@libroraptor @glitzersachen @rednikki @sundogplanets The thing is, to understand why you shouldn't use genAI for citations, you not only need to understand citations but also genAI. Most researchers have a different field of study than AI, so with regard to AI they are just as much a layperson as anyone in the general public, and getting the right information to them is just as hard. As for the bag of virtues that you attribute to academics—rigorous, critically thinking, etcetera—I honestly think that is hyperbole. They know how to do research, but otherwise they are still fallible humans. They don't necessarily stop to wonder whether they should use genAI, to the same degree that they don't necessarily stop to wonder whether they should use MS Excel or Adobe Acrobat. A lot of the time, they actually just do what everyone else is doing. Also, I work in academia myself and I wouldn't say that resources are so plentiful as you suggest. It probably depends on where you are, but where I am, researchers are constantly having trouble to fund their research while also having to balance research with education in too little time.
