After pollination, the tobacco flowers turn brown and fall off, leaving behind a seed pod. As it matures, the seed pod turns brown and dries out. When you can hear the seeds rattling around inside, the pods are ready to be harvested.
If there's interest, I can walk through my process from seed to smoke, starting with the seeds I just harvested.

@HighChurchBaptist@poa.st I tried to grow tobacco but they stopped growing at an inch or two. I tried giving them more sun but I forgot about them in the rain and they were destroyed. I'd be interested in what kind of seed mix you use.
