Which is riskier, American AI or Chinese AI? My latest piece asks what each government has already done with the power it holds.
Washington has switched AI access off three times in two years: OpenAI's China cut-off in 2024, Microsoft suspending an Indian refiner in 2025, the ban on Anthropic, its own lab, this February. Beijing's reach is written into intelligence law: no warrant, no appeal.
One asymmetry settles it. China gives its strongest weights away under open licences; America rents closed ones. Self-host an open model on European infrastructure and the foreign hand is gone.
