@jmaris@eupolicy.social for those who might want chrome OS-alike experience but with Linux - https://universal-blue.org/. For KDE, GNOME and gaming lovers.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social While I’m no fan of Microsoft, I find the claim that this initiative reduces eWaste a bit disingenuous - not necessarily in bad faith, but because the practical impact is limited. Most non-technical users are far more likely to keep using their machines if they can bypass Windows 11’s restrictions than if they’re asked to switch to Linux. This feels more like a well-intentioned push to promote Linux (which I completely support!) than a realistic strategy to reduce eWaste.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social MS won - I bought a Mac. The old one runs for special programs I need from time to time.

@kde@floss.social @jmaris@eupolicy.social It’s a bit of a shame they call it an “old” computer. I switched my fairly new computer to Linux after Windows became unusable. We shouldn’t push the message that Linux is for outdated tech.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social I wonder how many will really change, though. People are pretty brainwashed after all these years.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social For Windows PCs, just don't bother updating to Windows 11 - it's horrible. Utterly horrible. Either stick with what you've got or ditch it and go with a Linux install. For Mac computers, check out OpenCore Legacy Patcher. I have two Late-2013 Mac Pros running macOS Sequoia 15.4 without issue.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social And Microsoft did that so that many people would have to buy new computers.

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social Some polishing of the web site are still needed but I did not find how (or where) to help. If anyone knows, for instance on https://endof10.org/fr/ : - item 4 and 5 are not rendered correctly (markdown bold seems to be asked but not rendered) - main 3 first links (menu ?) are rendered on top of the title

@jmaris@eupolicy.social @kde@floss.social I am now Windows-free at home (except for work laptop). The last to go was my Zenbook Flip laptop, upon which I have just installed Fedora + KDE plasma. Everything just worked: screen rotate, fold to tablet mode, illuminated keys - all for which Fedora was the recommended choice. It was a hassle-free install. I left 180GB free on the NVMe SSD to put back the Win10 for dual boot, but after 2 weeks of living in Fedora I'm not so sure I need to do that.
