Now that Liu Xueyi has levelled up and has genuinely "blown up" in China, that means he would choose more serious roles from now on. Actors often start out in idol dramas (they are the training wheels), and then around their 30s are expected to transition to more serious roles in Cdramas that most international folks don't bother watching ๐.
(It is usually very difficult to transition to more serious roles, and very few actors have done this successfully. Many return to idol dramas because the money is there.)
I think this is partly because the beauty filter in idol dramas are pretty high. (Let's face it, idol dramas really push the oriental, exotic flavour up with their costume dramas and there's nothing like it in media elsewhere.)
That means no more Liu Xueyi in looks like this ๐
Why? Cos real ancient Chinese men don't keep their hair down lol. Unless they want to be known as a slob or a child (even kids don't keep their hair down lol). It's basically like showing up in public in your undies.
That's why in Against the Grain you never see Jinqi with his hair down even once. It was considered uncouth and uncivilized to do so, and is often used to humiliate men ๐, and that drama is not an idol drama but a proper historical one.
I am happy for you Liu Xueyi, but damn I am going to miss this look.
