I'm sometimes reminded that people are not necessarily aware that there is no "Default" or "Agreed Standard" or "Correct Way" to develop digital images. The closest we got to a standard, was applying a transform matrix and a display curve to the sensor data, but that consistently yielded grotesque pictures. The data that a sensor (chip) spits out requires processing, for it to turn into an observer-legible picture. Right now, everything is pretty much vendor-dependent.
