"So, we're all agreed about the new firebreaks? We'll cut two new roads through the forest, which should help prevent any fires from spreading."
"One more thing," said the ranger. "We must visit the dryads first and ask their permission."
"Dryads? Spirits of the trees?"
"Yes. They've been protecting the forest for thousands of years."
"Won't they oppose cutting down any trees at all?"
"Don't be silly. They'll tell us which trees we are allowed to cut down." The ranger looked around the room at the surprised faces. "Ignoring them is how we got into this mess."

@noam Me, the Lib Dem representing #Cambridge City Council, in a joint meeting with Tories representing the county (transport authority) and other local councils. Them, talking to each other about a particular road junction: "... but of course we can't improve this junction like that, because it would involve cutting down a tree, so the City will never accept it." Me: "I'm perfectly happy for you to cut *that* one down. It's in the wrong place, it obstructs cyclists, and it's pretty manky anyway. Just so long as you plant two new trees somewhere nearby to replace it."
