All you people suddenly advocating for the abolition of copyright because it’s being inconsistently enforced, without offering an alternative for creatives to not be ripped off, have evidently never created anything.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town putting aside the information wants to be free argument and that copyright favors those who have the economic means to litigate, in France (and maybe other European countries), we have « droits d’auteur » (author’s rights) which stipulate that authors of any artistic creation have an unalienable moral right over the paternity or maternity of their creations, distinct from economic rights to exploit their creations.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town I'm a published author and think that copyright is good in concept, but it's badly implemented. Specifically, exclusive use is too long, it should be in the 10-20 year range, and also it incentivises large publishing houses to screw over artists. I don't advocate for the removal of copyright, but I desperately want it to be reformed. There are some wider political movements like universal income that might make it irrelevant. We'll see if any of those happen.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town Disclaimer: I wouldn't advocate for abolishment of copyright willy-nilly, in this social and economic climate, at minimum people also need enough money to live, like a UBI or something. This is always interesting to me because I wonder if the presence of copyright actually improves the income of a creative, instead of only providing a feeling of security. Sure you get ripped off less, companies don't copy your work randomly, but surely that only affects income when the people ripping you off would be happy to pay if they were forced to. It does make perfect sense in its original context though, companies taking someone's book, reprinting it, and selling it slightly cheaper in the same market. Personally I release all I make to the dirt and the soil, and obviously I don't sell things I make so I have no firsthand experience.

@futzle@old.mermaid.town "Surely all creatives must support copyright" is too blanket a statement to be useful in understanding the world. There are plenty of people who are anti-copyright and themselves create with extremely permissive licenses or even CC0/Unlicense. (I'm one of those, I have 15 years of music and computer programs out as Unlicense). Some of us create for the joy of it and have no interest in exercising control over our works.
