Every issue of Byte magazine is now online. Old code. Old dreams. Still useful. The archive is a time machine. https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1975-09 #tech #history #STEM

@inkican@mastodon.social ooh! I used to enjoy reading Byte back in the 80s. Will have to take a wander down memory lane.

@inkican@mastodon.social From the ‘write your own assembler’ article in the first issue…. ‘But such obstacles have never stopped anyone with your boundless enthusiasm’

@inkican@mastodon.social So the first issue ads include an ad from "James" electronics in Belmont. Is this Jameco under a previous name? Also an ad nera the back indciates "tri-share is a trademark of National Semiconductor". Is this a typo? Or perhaps did National call tri-state "tri-share" back September 1975? Or is it something else altogether? National always loved their tristate trademark, that's for sure.

@inkican@mastodon.social The contents of #InternetArchive are valuable treasure. It's too bad that its UI is so horrible, that metadata of archived items is unreliable, and that it's often impossible to get anybody to correct mistakes. When I complained about inaccuracies in some items on their forum, the consensus was not that I should contact somebody to fix it. The suggestion was that I should upload another copy of the materials with the corrections. Do better @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org .

@inkican@mastodon.social this will be so useful for my research :blobcat3c: now, I wish one day the same happens for PCMag and Computerworld, by my guesstimate there’s ~10% of them archived online. And gosh, they would be so useful for fact-checking, too…

@inkican@mastodon.social searching the PDFs online is so much easier than digging through the boxes trying to find the article of interest. All that material is still highly relevant to vintage computer enthusiasts! 😀 👍

@inkican@mastodon.social Something else I have not seen in years: the Reader Service Card! You’d fill out this card and mail it to Byte. They would then send your mailing address to each of the vendors you chose on the card to have product information sent to you. Does anyone recall if being on the reader service card was automatic for companies with ads in the magazine? Or was it an upgrade option for ad buyers to also be on the card? This saved you from sending multiple info requests (and multiple stamps) to each company you wanted to reach. (Edited to add the image)
