Some partnerships are built at negotiating tables. Others simply grow through history, family ties, trade, culture, and shared values. The relationship between the European Union and Canada belongs firmly to the second kind.
From the trenches where Canadians stood alongside Europeans in defense of freedom from fascism, to the millions of family connections stretching across the Atlantic, to the thriving commercial links strengthened by strong business ties, the European-Canadian friendship has been tested by history and has always delivered. The bonds between our people, our cultures, and our businesses are not theoretical. They are lived, every single day.
So here is a thought worth taking seriously: it is time to give this relationship the framework it deserves. Canada should be granted a special status with the EU: an associate membership that formalizes what already exists in spirit and turns a close alliance into something truly unique.
Why does this matter?
🇪🇺 For Europe: a deeper partnership with Canada means stronger transatlantic cooperation on trade, energy, defense, technology and governance, anchored in a partner whose reliability is beyond question.
🇨🇦 For Canada: closer alignment with the world's largest single market means new opportunities for businesses, researchers, and workers, plus greater strategic depth at a time when geography alone no longer defines one's economic horizons.
🌍 For the world: at a moment when the international order based on international law is under pressure, a formalized EU–Canada new type of an alliance would send a powerful signal to the whole world that societies can still choose openness, build bridges rather than walls, and pursue shared prosperity with equal opportunities for all.
This is not about redrawing borders. It is about recognizing an alliance that already works and giving it the room to work even better, for Europeans and Canadians alike.
Deepening this relationship isn't a leap of faith. It is the natural next step of a story that has been written together for generations.
