The US-backed hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau that drew global backlash has been halted. The deeply unethical trial intended to withhold the hepatitis B vaccine from half of 14,000 newborns for their first 6 weeks of life to observe non-specific effects and health outcomes. Almost 1 in 5 adults in Guinea-Bissau carry the virus.
