The toxic disaster in East Palestine, Ohio after the chemical releases following the train derailment reveal classic #toxic disaster management techniques. The true extent of the danger and seriousness of the event is not made clear to people when it happens. Instead their anxieties are managed. This is a way to protect capital, and liability rather than living creatures. It is similar to the denial of there having been #nuclear meltdowns at #Fukushima for three months by the government of Japan. This was to protect reputation and perceptions, not human beings. My advice, as always: when an industrial disaster happens, what you are being told about the hazards on the first day are, at best, 10% of the real dangers you face. Always assume that you should get away as fast as possible. Better to be wrong and safe, than wrong and exposed. #EastPalestine #trainderailment #Ohio #train #chemicals https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/residents-ohio-train-derailment-report-dead-fish-chickens-rcna70378

There it is, 12 days later-- "The derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, released more hazardous substances than first reported, adding to the distrust and fear of nearby residents" "The disclosure has further elevated concern among residents of East Palestine, many of whom are still seeking answers about the amount of potential exposure to toxic fumes — both immediately after the crash and now — and whether it is safe for evacuated residents to return to their homes. Even some who weren’t ordered to evacuate are wondering whether they should consider leaving the area. 'We should have been evacuated. It stunk for 48 hours,' said Jackie Moore, 34, of Darlington, Pa., roughly eight miles away. From her home, the flames smelled like nail polish, she said." #EastPalestine #trainderailment #train #toxic #Ohio https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/02/14/ohio-train-derailment-toxic-chemicals/

After the 3/11 Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Government of Japan and TEPCO lied to the public about there having been three full meltdowns for several months. They were fully aware of these meltdowns by the March 12, but they did not publicly admit that this was reality until June 7, 2011. Their goal was to keep the word "meltdown" off of the front pages of the world's newspapers, when they did officially declare the meltdowns it was a story deeper into the paper. In these essential days of immediate risk, and full of the potential for far more catastrophic radiation releases, they prioritized managing perceptions over public health. This is the PR playbook of disaster. #Fukushima #meltdown #trainderailment #EastPalestine #Ohio

@bojacobs@hcommons.social I spent decades just west of the area, and I think it's worth noting that folks in this area likely spent their whole lives downstream of old steel mills and near mines. They're accustomed to environments damaged by industrial activities. If anything, they're probably under-reporting weird impacts.

@bojacobs@hcommons.social 9/11 was similar, with Christine Todd Whitman (EPA head) telling lies that the air quality after the attack was fine.

@bojacobs@hcommons.social I remember being in NYC for 9/11. They told us over and over that the air was fine. Nothing to worry about. All that dust from those buildings collapsing totally innocuous. They said it with total certainty. We know how that worked out.
