@joannejacobs@aus.social can I go off on a tangent, I'm wondering how much of the current cost of living crisis is real, and how much is a consequence of everybody being shovelled cash during COVID to the point where expectations have changed?

@joannejacobs@aus.social If given the opportunity, many international students stay afterwards and become highly skilled professionals paying a lot of taxes. I know many examples who paid back their PhD salaries several times over and counting. This is one of the most overlooked societal contributions by academic institutions.

@joannejacobs@aus.social Or do you want us to have a university system that people really want to come to and learn from, and bringing their money and culture to enhance our whole research environment? Or do we want to be middling in our research? And have to send our best students abroad to study (and pay money for them), where they are liable to stay? You are right - it is ridiculous.
