“Rules for thee, but not for me.” North Carolina company fined half a mil for dumping forever chemicals into the Cape Fear River goes “oops, we’re broke, can’t pay” and gets away with it. No jail time, no repercussions. Do you need any more proof we live in an #oligarchy where rich corporations pollute as they please? Imagine if you had a court fine and said you weren’t able to pay…you’d be locked up so fast it would make your head spin. #corporatocracy

White collar crime is FAR worse than blue collar crime, and yet it isn’t regulated, investigated, or even treated as crime. #oligarchy #corporatocracy

  • @aburtch@shakedown.social Wilmington's water is a disaster. Even down in Brunswick county where I have a house, there are signs of this cavalier attitude. Only the little people live on the coast.

@aburtch@shakedown.social Alt text: "NC company avoids $500K fine after years of polluting river By Virginia Bridges and Lily Carey After dumping chemicals into the Cape Fear River for years, American Distillation Inc. avoided a $500,000 fine, and its owner secured a delay in reporting to prison. American Distillation pleaded guilty in December 2025 to knowingly discharging pollutants into the Cape Fear River over four years. Under its plea agreement, the company faced a fine of up to $500,000 and agreed to establish and enforce an environmental compliance plan. The company intended to meet those obligations when it signed the agreement, its attorney wrote in August. But its 'current financial circumstances are such that the company does have the funds to pay a fine and may not be able to afford to implement the ECP,' the filing states. Prosecutors sought the maximum fine during Friday's sentencing hearing in the federal Eastern District of North Carolina, but US District Judge" cont'd #AltText

  • @aburtch@shakedown.social As a boy who grew up on that river (although just north of Fayetteville), I drove past all of the plants along it that were polluting it on a regular basis. But once republicns gained control of the state, especially those who worked for Duke Energy, it was over. I've since moved to upstate New York (IMAGINE THAT!) and LOVE it here. The environment is a top priority for the state. Clean air, clean water. NC WAS like that. No more. Bigly sad.

  • @aburtch@shakedown.social @meganL@mas.to The legal system in the US is a fucking joke. The company’s assets should have been seized and the company liquidated. And the C-Suite should face at least 5 years in the slammer.

@aburtch@shakedown.social @meganL@mas.to Courts should have the right to reclaim dividends for the last 10 years in these cases. Limited liability my ass.

@aburtch@shakedown.social An economy where corporations keep the profit and tax payers cover the costs is not capitalism. It is the government redistribution of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy.

  • @aburtch@shakedown.social If you are a real person, not a company, I think that if you file for bankruptcy the courts might take that into account if you are judged guilty and have to pay a fine right ?

@aburtch@shakedown.social Why do you think shell companies exist? It's not because Capitalism resists 'too much'. Greed is actually being bred, and passed on genetically as more dominant traits, just in America alone. This, along with many other cascading causes, is why Behavioral Science needs to be Core Education.

@aburtch@shakedown.social If it's a public company then the shareholders should pay. If it's owned by venture capital, private individuals or is a subsidiary then the owners should pay.

@aburtch@shakedown.social Interesting to combine this story with the fact McClatchy (owners of The News & Observer) is taking another hatchet to reporter positions in the company. Again.
