Indeed. Furthermore, I personally learned a lot from the Common Lisp Condition System itself. (My knowledge of PL/1 is very small and does not include its notion of conditions. My knowledge of the Lisp Machine is also too small.) «Names ARE useful to remember sometimes just as a tag to group concepts.» Yes, and ... «For myself, it's been enough for me to know that [Shakespeare] knew about ours, i.e., that he understood human nature.» ... yes. ("Those works weren't written by Shakespeare, but by somebody else with the same name.") «So it's not madness to remember people by name, I just don't think it needs to be done for vanity, because that's a useless pursuit.» Quite so, but the lure of its siren song is very strong. «I played arcade video games when I was in college and just after. It was fun to get onto the high score board, but someone regularly unplugged the machine and my name was wiped. That's my model of history.» I appreciate this metaphor. I shall be passing it on to certified historians (and prehistorians, who are actually archaeologists, as well as to protohistorians, who have one foot in each field 🙂). «I'd like humanity not to get unplugged quite so quickly as we seem intent on doing.» It's never as good as we want; it's never as bad as it seems. @kentpitman@climatejustice.social @amoroso@oldbytes.space
