To be fair, fanfic doesn't have to be about alternate relationships. It can be just fixing the studio/corporate butchering of a working lore, or going in directions that are legit but aren't interesting enough for movie/TV writers. And some of the fanfic crowds are VERY particular about consistency. Fanfic for Star Wars prequels is pretty incredible. What could have been. And sure, that includes relationships.
