I am now able to solve the first two layers consistently without looking anything up but the following moves are just so much harder to memorize (or to understand) so this will take me a while.
It definitely was a good idea to get a good cube to start, though. And even solving these first two layers still feels like magic even though I kinda know what I'm doing.

I think I have all the moves memorized for the layer-by-layer solve now. I still make the occasional mistake that makes me start over, but I solved the cube about 10 times now without looking at my notes. I even solved the small keychain cube I had sitting on a shelf for ages but boy howdy did that make me appreciate the nice big cube.
