Volcanic Dawn
September 2014, and the Holuhraun eruption of Bárðarbunga volcano is raging about 100 km / 62 mi to the south of us. It's 6:15 in the morning and the sun will rise in about half an hour.
Looking towards the east, the sky is already lit by the rising sun but we're directly below the volcanic plume, so it's also strongly affected by the noxious gases in the atmosphere. The result is quite surreal and otherworldly.
Laugar in north-eastern Iceland.
