I wrote this post in response to a viral video of a minor girl who was harassed & assaulted at 7pm while returning from coaching by loser men who were moral policing. The incident is so triggering & what makes it even more disturbing is how quickly a girl’s trauma becomes viral content. No one blurred her face, her abusers wore a mask even when he was arrested. This happened in Bihar & now, its Delhi. A 17 yo girl is gang raped in a park by adult men posing to be police. Again 730 pm in a park.

@altlife@me.dm A while ago, I listened/watched this version of the Ramayana. https://www.youtube.com/@21Notes/playlists In the beginning the storyteller guy explains how Ayodhya was a safe city where women could walk anywhere freely. So perhaps, in the past India was a different place for women. However, in the later chapters, there is the question of Sita's purity after being kidnapped. Ram even does a whole theatrical drama of accepting Sita back and trusting her virtue, and it's for the common people around them.

@altlife@me.dm I was at a work gathering for an international organization, and I ended up having a long, lovely, enriching conversation with two coworkers: a Black British woman about 15 years younger than me (a white American woman in my 50s) and an Indian woman about 15 years younger than her. Three professional women, three generations, three continents, three races. But when talk turned to street safety, the youngest told us that she had been molested on the street and in public transportation. Then I said I have had similar experiences. Then our British friend said she had, too. It was a heavy moment acknowledging that no woman was safe, no place was safe, and things were not getting any better. A literal hashtag-MeToo moment. As far as I can see, feminism is the best treatment for patriarchy, but it doesn't work very well or have a long-lasting effect. We have to keep asserting and asserting rights, over and over, to keep pushing back the oppressive effect of men given power and, even worse, men not given power. Keep your head up, Priyanka. ❤️
