I haven't read it, but "Dungeon Crawler Carl", is giving me "Ready Player One .. "vibes from the little I have seen about it. If you've read it does that seem .. accurate?

  • @Faintdreams@dice.camp I haven't read RPO but the snippets I saw of Dungeon Crawler just look like incelbait schlock.

@Faintdreams@dice.camp as someone who is a fan of neither: yes. I rage-read Ready Player One, disliking it almost all the way through, but wanting to see how it ended. I didn’t get far into the first Dungeon Crawler Carl before giving up. It delights in its own assumed knowledge of the subject matter and never stops letting you know how much it knows about it, just like RP1. Denis E. Taylor did the whole referential, knowing pastiche thing with a lot more style and less “look at me, I know stuff!”

  • @Faintdreams@dice.camp I don't think so. Ready Player One was basically nostalgia bait the whole way through. DCC has some of the gonzo bashing toys together feel, except that it's very much people's lives at stake and the horror is real and impactful.
