@selea@social.linux.pizza Similar experience here in Latvia - meshtastic network was good for sending "test" but meshcore has at least some conversations - for tech people in nordic countries each conversation is a miracle! Meshtastic just silently died in background. Meshcore coverage occasionally spans area from Finland to Germany even when there are no mountains here. ~250km link over the sea to Gdańsk is a pretty normal thing.

@krahabors@toot.lv @selea@social.linux.pizza It's the same here in Estonia — and everywhere — but the reason is usually that Meshtastic came first, and people moved on to Meshcore because it's the new, shiny thing (and the next waiting just around the corner). That's the mindset of tinkerers and maintainers. The same applies to the open-source community in general: 'Go fork it; let's try a different distribution' etc. Or look at the BSD folks, who mainly pop up in my timeline reporting that they have successfully updated their system. (No offence — I love the BSDs, use them, and support anyone who does.) Usually, you would need a maintainer for hundreds of users, but in our communities, it's the opposite — everyone is a maintainer, and no one actually uses it for communication. Why is that? Because, for communication, you need something to communicate other than "test" or "ping". For this, you need to be interested in more than just technical things. In Estonia, we would say, 'Go and purchase a life!' ("osta endale elu") Or it's like on DMR, where people will discuss their code plug for hours on end, but never talk anything interesting. I fear it's up to us to make it interesting, otherwise the communities will die.
