From the Devil
Jeffrey - he don’t come around
The neighborhood no more,
He just rides his bike on by
With that darkness in his eyes.
The boys and I remember when
He’d smile at our door
How he’d join us in our games
Before we made up all those lies.
They say
You can lead a horse to water,
But you cannot make him drink,
You can bring me to your horse,
But you cannot make me ride.
No matter what your gospel says,
No matter what you think,
What you hold inside your heart
From the devil you can’t hide.
There is something in the power
That will burn inside your chest
Doesn’t matter if you like it
Doesn’t matter what you dare.
When we played that trick on Jeffrey
When I ripped apart my dress
My paleness ‘gainst his darker skin …
I sure felt that power flare.
They say
You can lead a horse to water,
But you cannot make him drink,
I know why the boys ain’t dancing
I know why there ain’t no bride.
You can hate a lot of people,
Hang your face into the sink,
What you hold inside your heart
From the devil you can’t hide.
All that laughter without joy
Like a hungry, wild flame -
I didn’t have to have no money
Because he’s the one who paid.
I could feast upon the penance
And devour all his shame
I could steal the heat inside him
For the fire that I made.
They say
You can lead a horse to water,
But you cannot make him drink,
You can sacrifice that horse,
But you can’t bring back your pride.
No matter what your gospel says,
No matter what you think,
What you hold inside your heart
From the devil you can’t hide.
