For the longest time the serial baudrate was matched to the mechanics. Only with the advent of microprocessors did the need for flow-control arise.
And CR taking longer time was not a problem, because it also took longer time on the senders teletype.

@bsdphk@fosstodon.org @fanf@mendeddrum.org ADM3a required a delay after a clear screen and it only had random logic.
