Well. Thats an issue. You can only choose from people whom the organization has put up. Few people participate in organizations/parties.
But you are free to make your own party and nominate who ever you like. So I don’t really agree with your statement.
It’s easy to complain. How would you organize elections?

It was a bit of tongue in cheek comment…but I agree that a mere possibility of change can restrain the rulers. Those socialist systems fell apart when people had option to disagree.
