I'm looking to buy a few #Braille Displays to test and support them on #FreeBSD I've found several used models on eBay for under €400, which would be perfect for my needs. Unfortunately, almost all of them are located in the United States, so the shipping costs are quite high. Does anyone know of any websites or online stores in Europe where I can buy new or used Braille displays? Any links or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! #Accessibility #UNIX #openSource #brailledisplay #a11y #screenreader

@alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe i think a lot of braille displays are just expensive. a company in the UK called bristol braille sells a series of displays they call the canute and they seem to range from £995 to £3,295. cool machines though.

@alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe Alternatively, you could try contacting e.g. the German Blindenstudienanstalt (blista.de) to see whether they would loan or sponsor you some to improve accessibility.

@alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe @FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com Try contacting schools, universities, local councils (or the equivalent in your country), and blindness charities to see if they have any they're looking to get rid of or would let you borrow. Join braillists mailing lists and social media groups where people post these for sale.

  • @alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe I can see one potential good deal at 100€ on kleinanzeigen.de And a few on leboncoin.fr ranging from 500 to 1000€. If it can help, I could re-ship them to Italy. And maybe you can find a kind soul in the US to do that too?

@alfonsosiciliano@mastodon.bsd.cafe It might be worth contacting some of the manufacturers directly for models to test? In the UK, Humanware and Freedom Scientific products; temd to be pushed: both are US-based but I know the former has European reps. Papenmeier are, I think, a German outfit and I've always aspired to give them a go. I'm interested in the state of support on *BSD, as I am contemplating switching from Linux (currently using a HumanWare Brailliant Be 40 X)
