the crap on the screen is CGA snow. it's happening because i end up looping over the whole thing and i'm not waiting for blanking periods to write to video memory. the CGA's DRAM is single-ported and this makes it upset

i usually like staging but DosBox-X's 8088 emulation is more accurate. why am i not using my own emulator? because it's a low level emulator and i have to reboot the entire machine when i hang the CPU. which i am doing. a lot.
