There are better ways to protect children online: ⚫️ Tackle business models that reward engagement maximisation ⚫️ Restrict intrusive profiling and behavioural advertising ⚫️ Mandate giving people control over recommender systems and feeds ⚫️ Support social media models that put people in control #ageverification #privacy #freedomofexpression #onlinesafety #socialmediaban #ukpolitics #ukpol #digitalrights

@openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org “That means every adult having to show their ID to get online“ is quite obviously and provably wrong. It is, as you put it, a “social media ban”, not a requirement to show ID to get online. Online and Social Media are not the same thing, one is a subset of the other.

@openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org This act will conveniently make Mastodon and other non-major platforms effectively illegal in the UK. Only the big ones will have the resources to implement this..

@openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org Will Britain's King Chip have to register to read his tampon fanfic like the rabble?

@openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org To be clear: it is not the verification that puts privacy at risk, it is the implementation that does so. It is one of the many side-effects of the UK's aversion to ID's and citizen registration. If that would have existed (like in other countries), the government could have provided a public authentication and authorisation service (cf. the Belgian e-ID, or the Dutch Digid) which could do the verification, and only return yes/no, and no privacy sentitive data.

@patrickleavy@mastodon.social @openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org you're missing the problem, age verification laws effectively *make your alternatives illegal* because they can't adopt the sort of intrusive, privacy-violating technologies that the laws require

@crucialbreeze@mastodon.social @openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org I am vehemently opposed to the OSA, but deliberately inaccurate sensationalist bullshit like this really doesn’t help 🤨
