You might have to invest in a little more equipment up front, but ultimately, after gauging your energy needs, you could exist autonomous of the utility. Start by isolating a few circuits in the house to just run on your battery fed solar setup. Then slowly expand your array system and batteries or cut back on energy use until you don't need the utility provider. Just a suggestion.
