@jectoons@comicscamp.club I don't necessarily disagree, but I also don't know if the "global culture" genie could ever go back into the bottle (though I say this living in the current cultural hegemon, which might flatten the rest of the world), and don't know if it would affect anything (especially with a community of mostly isolated creators) for creators to build in some level of isolation from the rest, if that makes sense.

@jcolag@mastodon.social I didn't mean that we needed to make things in isolation from the rest - rather that there are aspects of culture that are specific to particular communities. I think the idea of a global culture is, indeed, a colonial and hegemonic one, and part of the issues with copyright (and, unfortunately, with free culture licenses, since they depend on that legal framework), is exactly that flattening of diversity. I'll speak from my own perspective: Mexican culture is part of my heritage, and at the same time I personally am a product of colonialism, since I grew up quite privileged and with a European-based education (and if 23andme is to be trusted, at least in their results, lots of European genes). While I understand my country's history and embrace it, I cannot fully understand the lived experience of the indigenous populations in my home state, for example, let alone that of other indigenous populations in México. Could it be argued that I have a right to take from their cultural heritage all willy-nilly just because we share a "nationality" (whose borders were dictated by Europeans and their descendants)? I'd say no. Does this mean I cannot be inspired by them? Again, I'd say no. But in order for their and my cultural sensibilities to be mixed up in a way that truly fosters creativity and community there has to be mutual understanding, and even mutual exchange and support. Dunno if that makes sense. :thinking_rotate:
