Which raises a lot of questions about this story, come to think of it. None of these employees nor customers consented to their data being used in this way. The courts did not forcibly make it public, as they had in Enron. This seems... bad?

  • @chetwisniewski@securitycafe.ca Except that it's commonly accepted that emails written for the company are the company's property, otherwise they couldn't use it to conduct business. This is why you never use your company email for personal related items like company retirement plans and medical.

@chetwisniewski@securitycafe.ca El Reg reports "The court filing says the data was deidentified before being put on sale and Google has promised to scrub any PII it finds in the trove" and yeah, they don't buy it either "The Register awaits evidence of the inevitable SNAFUs that mean some personal info appears as the result of a future prompt, or search" https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/08/18/google-buys-crashed-airline-spirits-data-at-auction-because-ai/5288962
