Another month, another few mehs that I let go.
🔵 “Episode Thirteen” by Craig DiLouie
Some books are so bad that they become good in a fun way. This is not one of them. It’s a mixed media (blogs, text messages, scripts, etc) horror book about a research team going into a haunted house. The format makes it easy to read, so I made it to page 200. The sunk cost fallacy had me in a chokehold, but I had to let the book go. It’s too bad. The characters are flat, the haunting isn’t spooky, the quoted science is nonsense, it was badly written, everything was predictable. I’d rather be haunted by an apparition than by this book.
🔵 “A Healthy Appetite” by Katie Huttlestone
I received an ARC for this from the publisher (thanks!) so I’m extra sad that I didn’t like it enough to finish it. Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me, I dnf'd about 1/3 of the way through. I found the writing style too casual and silly for a horror book, it made me feel like I was reading satire rather than something that was supposed to provoke a sense of eeriness or at least curiosity in me. I appreciated the descriptions of illness, and the insecurity and mixed feelings that can come with it, but it wasn't enough to keep me reading.
🟠 “Het netwerk moet gebouwd worden” by Maxime Garcia Diaz
A long, mixed media poetry collection. Looked intriguing, but it couldn’t hold my interest. I just wasn’t feeling it.
