What gave Tim Cook's privacy letter heft in 2014 wasn't just the clarity of its plain language, but the fact that you didn't have to take his word for it that the ads Apple showed you respected your privacy, because Apple didn't show you ads in 2014. https://daringfireball.net/2026/07/ternus_apple_slippery_slope

    @gruber@mastodon.social looks like the slide is continuing unabated. They've removed the option to dismiss the "offer" for AppleCare plans. No more "Not now" button, so forced to stare at the (1) badge on Settings on all my platforms.

    @gruber@mastodon.social Right on, but re “you’re not the customer, you’re the product” i believe 1. is not so simple. It is a little more. Just two examples of where i do not feel as the customer: https://seiz.it/2026/03/apple-music-on-apple-tv.html https://seiz.it/2026/02/helping-apple-to-bring-back-the-joy.html

  • @gruber@mastodon.social The presence of ads in the Wallet lately has made me consider for the first time in a long while whether I want to dump their ecosystem entirely. Their privacy posture and lack of advertisement was a huge win for their brand as pro-consumer. Now it feels adversarial.

    @gruber@mastodon.social It’s been a strategic misstep

  • @gruber@mastodon.social Advertising companies, including Apple, do not deserve the benefit of doubt on privacy. Apple has already been caught accessing the IDFA even when it is disabled for third parties "because we are not a third party". https://mjtsai.com/blog/2022/11/09/analytics-in-apple-apps/ I have collected other examples of abuse here: https://blog.majid.info/defang-apple/ Apple's alleged privacy protections are a sham, designed to kneecap advertising competitors, not protect user privacy.

    @gruber@mastodon.social I agree but there is some moral distinction between tracking your activity on their own App Store so they can show you ads and tracking everything to do it. Not much difference but some.

    @gruber@mastodon.social Earth to Ternus: kill ads in Maps first. Or, turn them off by default and make them customer-enabled. Keep an animated icon of Steve Jobs laughing visible, tap Laughing Steve icon to turn ads back on.
