@clock @signalapp Is signal open source? Can't someone fork the code and change it to be pure peer to peer over onion routing to set up credentials?

@BuckRogers1965 @signalapp I don't know. Even if Signal were open source, I don't know how to compile Signal and upload onto iPhone so that it actually runs, without me spending unacceptable amount of resources (money, time, nerves), and I don't know whether it's not intentionally obstructed.

@BuckRogers1965 @clock @signalapp Please read my reply: https://ieji.de/@f/116072098730700499 Peer to peer can't and won't happen due to the nature of the protocol. As an alternative, look into Jami. The Signal protocol is the strongest instant messaging protocol ever. It is fully end-to-end encrypted, uses strong algorithms, avoids almost all leaks of metadata. Two major downsides arise: - server centralization (only relays, but we depend on that) - phone number requirement, and really tying your identity on a phone app: can't use Signal with just a computer. I still don't know why they aren't making steps to remove that barrier. The issue is not with forking the client. We need to: - Pressure them into changing their host providers outside of the US to one that could be less hostile to them (currently there are none that exist to the scale AWS operates at -- those are called hyperscalers) - Look into decentralized protocols like Matrix. Those usually leak a lot of metadata to the homeservers owners of people you're communicating with (anything else over than the message contents) due to how they work, but atleast they won't be affected by the centralization problem. Just like Mastodon or other federated networks you might know of. It all depends on use cases, but the long term solution is decentralized or P2P protocols. "Global scale" is just a corporate buzzword and, to me, is a mistake.
