@Terry "incompetent empire" narratives are always wrong. when USrael looks like it's flailing and making stupid decisions, no it's not. when they're not achieving their stated goals, it's because stated goals =/= actual goals.
Trump is a salesman. The current phase of the war is his foot-in-the-door technique while he sells the war to the Americans and Arabs who will be cannon fodder. It's about normalizing the war, deploying the domestic infrastructure for the draft, setting the stage for the new 9/11, and transitioning to a war economy. There's also a parallel, longer-running process of prepping the masses psychologically for open nuclear warfare.
In modern warfare, as we have seen in Ukraine, much of the existing military stockpiles and infrastructure (eg tanks, jets, ships, above-ground bases) are obsolete or have degraded utility. Even worse, there's a pervasive belief among our owners that human beings are becoming obsolete. Therefore, using the (obsolete) American bases and zogbots in the Gulf to absorb Iranian missiles is strategic according to the FIFO principle, while the US economy does mass layoffs so they can transition workers to either the MIC and mass production of drones and robots, or cannon fodder. Finally, it is very possible that this does destroy the US in the end, but ZOG is global, so that is also not a threat but rather a benefit to them.
