The anthem wasn't erased, East Germayn adopted the existing West German anthem.
The reason for this is: It was never a unification on a level playing field, but East Germany decided to accede to the existing West German Federal Republic of Germany.
In my view, it's one of the major faults of the re-union:
We didn't form a new, unified nation, but one nation was merged into the other.

@ckd@mas.to @prolrage@todon.nl Yes that's pretty much exactly what I was saying (a long time ago, cause this toot is more than one year old). Governments decided for people that their country will disappear and merge in another one, resulting in the disappearance of everything that made their country different (and sometimes, better for the general well-being).
