A thought/feeling that bubbled up over the weekend... Many of us who work in software development are being told loudly and often how excited we should be that AI can* now write code - so we can concentrate on other things instead. It's weird to me that anyone would expect people who chose a profession/field of study based on their interest in an activity to be bubbly and enthusiastic about *not* getting to do it any longer. *quality/accuracy/basic function may vary

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk on the other hand, we have the model of oil paining once photography became good - the artists had to go thru quite a process to decide what the value was of painting. My wife paints today, but we use photography to record our family occasions and members. @kushlani@mastodon.online software folk has gotten a lot of money and freedom from the society, we can afford to be gracious in all things.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk it’s like being a drummer. Someone comes along and tells you they have a machine you can use to play the drums for you. You just have to tell it what you want. But all you’re interested in is playing the drums. And the more you tell them you don’t care about describing how to play the drums to a machine… the more they insist that you should. It’s weird. And probably has little to do with playing the drums.

@airadam@mastodon.me.uk to me it's more: people that never cared about how you solved challenges are now telling you how to best do your work. It's a bit like football/soccer: everyone's a national team manager now.
