#Electronics question. Imagine you’re building a small guitar amp, like the Ruby or Noisy Cricket, and want to power it using a LiIon or similar battery instead of a 9V block. Would it be better to use a 1S configuration with a step-up converter (simpler charging circuit, but potentially more noise during operation) or a 3S configuration without the DCDC converter between battery and amp (hopefully no extra noise introduced, but more complex charging circuitry)?

@tiefpunkt@social.tchncs.de any kind of power audio application is going to benefit from the lower surge impedance of a higher voltage batt directly connected

  • @tiefpunkt@social.tchncs.de low power, here is what I'd do! 1S, get a dc-dc isolator, B0515S, this will *3 the voltage, which is enough even at cutoff, BUT its noisy! The output is isolated, so you can put this in SERIES with the battery for *4, then I would regulate it back using a 7809 for a nice, clean supply! wrap it all in tinfoil and nobody should ever hear it! the isolators are typically rated to 1w, which is pretty good, and they can operate at the low 3V point (lots of switching boost converters wont) of the battery and are good to 5v (well more actually), which would be long after the battery has exploded from overcharging!

@tiefpunkt@social.tchncs.de i’d go with multi cell, which would let me use a linear regulator if it turns out that a buck caused problems. With protected 18650 cells charging is easy, just use either a balancing bms intended for power tools, or a usb step up charging module.
