The issue is trust asymmetry in a security product. Mullvad’s users who need it most — undocumented people, activists, journalists in hostile environments — are exactly those targeted by the party he funded. A co-CEO of a privacy company actively financing the expansion of state power over vulnerable people isn’t a “private matter”. It’s a governance conflict. A judge can defend free speech and still recuse themselves from a case where they’ve donated to one of the parties. Same logic applies here. The question isn’t his opinions. It’s whether he should remain in a position of trust over infrastructure that protects the people his politics endanger.

@mullvadnet@mastodon.online I can see how this situation can be really hard for all Mullvad employees. Sure, the donation may be private and you have no say in it, but the private money would not exist without your work. Part of the value you created went to the CEO and then to a political party which may change the world you live in. We will receive the consequences of that political change, but you must now live with the knowledge that you participated. Honestly, I'd just leave that CEO behind.

I support people's right to express and access views that I disagree with free from government interference. But I try not to give my money to people who will then give that money on to Fascists. That is the issue. So, in good conscience, I cannot continue to send money to a company that enriches Daniel Berntsson, so that he can give the money to Örebropartiet. Many authoritarians say they support free expression when they do not have power, then to suppress it once they do. Lenin and Trotsky talked a good game about freedom of speech until they had power. If Örebropartiet protects freedom of expression once they have power, it'll be the first time a far-right party does so. If Daniel Berntsson thinks they will, he's a fool.
