Except that my parents were sufficiently cavalier about our safety that primary school was on the other side of the city and a bus+tram (8 mile) journey away. Mind you, in my early teens, they arranged for a cousin to leave me in Hamburg on a hitch-hiking trip to make my own way home. Via Oslo.
