This story starts with the Draghi report Draghi finds that - EU companies specialise in mature technologies - where there is less potential for a breakthrough. They spend much less on on research and innovation (R&I) than their US counterparts - The top EU companies for R&I spending continue to be automotive companies, whilst top US innovators have transitioned towards technology - Europe must close the innovation gap with the US and China, especially in advanced technologies

Results? EU depends on US tech Amazon, Microsoft and Google now account for 70% of the European cloud market while European providers only capture 15% of their domestic market This is down from 29% in 2017. However, European providers have more than tripled their revenues from 2017 to 2024, but the market grew by a factor of six This dependence on US technology has spiralled into security concerns, as the American 2018 CLOUD Act gives the US access to data collected in overseas data centres

@rafa_font@mastodon.online With the exception of AI and cloud computing, isn't the 'innovation' thing a thing of the 'past', an overestimation of US BigTechs? In which areas have their BigTechs really innovated in the last 10 years? (don't count the companies they have acquired.) Most of the tools released by US BigTechs in the last 10 weren't revolutionary. Meta's business relies on apps where you post text and photos and send messages. There may be other reasons for this EU dependency as well...
