The best alternative to supporting vicious transphobia by buying Harry Potter is to read Ursula K Le Guin's Earthsea books, which are magical, good-hearted, beautifully written, and rooted in anthropology. Please don't buy anything Harry Potter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthsea

@timwaterman@mas.to I second this - completely drawn into other worlds by her books as a kid. Same for Octavia E. Butler, whose name I had forgotten until the internet reminded me yesterday, coincidentally

@timwaterman@mas.to ... and unlike the HP novels, they are beautifully written.

@timwaterman@mas.to Worth mentioning that the protagonists as a whole aren't white, either- this was one of her big problems with the adaptations. Deadly Education by Naomi Novik is a good trilogy about a magic school from an English girl (..sort of). Might be more for 12+ though. Terry Pratchett's YA (ish) Aching set is fantastic. Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series is excellent, as well!

  • @timwaterman@mas.to The HP saga is a direct anticipation of current AI/LLM: plagiarize existing knowledge, adding nonsense without understanding a thing, but for supporting greed billionaires. Then they both converge on hate for human diversity and great support for pedophiles and nazists.

@timwaterman@mas.to Or Diana Wynne Jones. Or (the non-horror books by) T. Kingfisher.

@timwaterman@mas.to I'll be doing my shopping later, and I'm sure the Robert Galbraith books will magically disappear behind other books - they usually do.
