It seems that Japanese literature is steeped in atheist and modernist nihilism (a Western gift from the modern era) which I see as a severe mental illness with lethal consequences for culture and the survival of a nation. This is not a sustainable state. Of course, the post-modern trivialization of art (Hollywood, Anime, Netflix), or its reduction to fetish-service (Porn, Anime), is not the right direction either. Art must, by its very essence, instruct without being prescriptive, like a loving father who awaits with opens arms the return of the prodigal son. One of the great gifts of art is the conveyance of truth, or in other words, the conveyance of the spiritual, psychological, perhaps even theological and cosmic without requiring physical involvement. Avoiding the logic of someone who enjoys murder and child-sacrifice allows only the conclusion that art, at its deepest level, then must serve to promote life, not in a crude quantitative way (more is better; the logic of a bacterium), but by ennobling and elevating it in a qualitative way (better is better; the logic of health). As such, to abuse this high-level domain access for anti-life/anti-meaning intentions, or for postmodern chaos (everything is relative, you make your meaning), or for reduction to lust and vices, is a crime against humanity. A crime that cannot be detected as such by a culture that has lowered art, by principle, to trivial entertainment and preference for itching ears. The solution then can only be a rejection of that which rejects life, a rejection of the arbitrary, and a rejection of the dishonest and servile; replaced by a return to art as a hospital that cures the soul, a fraternity that illuminates the soul, and as a cathedral that elevates the soul.
