@redcrew@mstdn.social Not to mention the noise.... raking leaves can be quite zen, quiet too - maybe we all need to be more zen like, ditch some tools. My neighbours gardener does not use power tools, the garden looks tidy (a lot more than mine!) but the only noise I sometimes hear is the hand clipping of hand tools.

@redcrew@mstdn.social JFC! Also the decibel’s are super loud. That can’t be good for anyone

@redcrew@mstdn.social I hate those things. My neighbor has one and he has a tiny little yard like mine. But he has to use the damn noisy thing once or twice per week to clean off his tiny driveway. I could do it a lot quicker with a broom, but I guess he's never heard of those. Honestly I think he's showing off "look at me> I have an expensive tool I didn't really need. That means I'm successful".

@redcrew@mstdn.social yeah even motorcycles have worse emissions than cars even though they burn less fuel

@redcrew@mstdn.social They will be fully illegal to operate in Portland Oregon on 1/1/2028. City has set up educational and incentive plans for gardeners to replace/phase out GPLBs.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Suddenly I feel very proud that I am using an electric mower, trimmer, and leaf blower. I got myself a Greenworks Pro and am thankful that I did.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Trip. You could probably charge quite a few 12V RV batteries with a DC/DC charger hooked up to that Toyota while driving that. Then use those to charge your electric blower for probably more than an hour. I haven't tried it yet but I guess the resistance caused by the draw actually has a negligible effect on engine power needs.

@redcrew@mstdn.social yup. two stroke motors are shockingly dirty burning, and decades of forcing cars to be less polluting has made them shockingly clean (for what they do) *and* developed absurdly effective post-processing (for what they do) like catalytic converters. I would not be sad to ban two-stroke motors from nearly everywhere. It'd spur a lot of small four-stroke progress. Yes, they're more complicated, but there's little excuse nowadays and the stragglers are causing more pollution than they're worth. They are much worse than most people realize. > CARB’s own tally is blunter. Smog-forming emissions from small off-road engines in California already exceed those from every passenger car in the state, and the board projects they will be nearly double by 2031.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Our township passed an ordinance banning their use over the summer months to start, expanding into spring and fall in future years until a complete ban is in effect. Township staff has also held information sessions with providers of battery powered alternatives that include a pathway to building up a collection of batteries to run any number of electric lawn care equipment.

@redcrew@mstdn.social they emit unfiltered exhaust AND two stroke motors require gas/oil mix for lubrication. it's burning gas and oil at the same time and pumping that raw exhaust into the air

@redcrew@mstdn.social i always thought leaf blowers were stupid, like putting dog shit in plastic bags. The bio cycle relies on leaf debris and other bio matter to maintain fungus, microbiology and eventually become nutrients in the soil again.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Forget all that science stuff. I have *yet* to see anyone using these things actually _gather_up_ the leaves for disposal/compost. There is not a single reason for these to exist, when all they do is _move_ debris to a different place. So typically American: "I'll invent this thing to make raking leaves someone else's problem."

@redcrew@mstdn.social Used to live on bottom floor of an apartment block. Without fail every Saturday morning some dick with a really loud leaf blower would spend an hour outside my window. I always felt nauseated with the fumes. These horrible things should be banned.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Do you want to ban it? Those devices do spray; they're literally fumigators used without pesticides, except perhaps by a neighbor, or as part of a local mosquito management plan, or a global conspiracy to end the free world with low altitudes chemtrails.

@redcrew@mstdn.social Thanks for sharing. Our powerful folks'/political decisions have led us here: property lines + property taxes . housing as investment + class marker +/- racist redlining + HOAs . single-family dwellings . monoculture grass lawns . leaf blowers #USPol #ClimateChange #emissions
