Many sad and powerful slides and references in Sara Bonito's talk on Gender Inequality in Astronomy - this one did in particular hit home. #astrodon #science #AcademicChatter

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social I still regularly remember the harassment towards Katie Bouman after her the black hole image, and it makes me furious.

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social Additional alt text (1 out of 3): Inset box on left: ""Draw a scientist" At age 5-8, a majority of children draw a female scientist about as often as a male one. By age 16, only about 1 in 4 do". Inset box on right: "Unequal attention in the classroom Teachers give differential, often unconscious, attention to boys and girls in STEM subjects, reinforcing who is expected to "belong" in science"

  • @vicgrinberg@mastodon.social I ironically had the opposite problem. STEM was the only thing I got any kind of praise for as a kid

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social this reminds me that there are almost zero black senior mathematicians in academia in the uk

  • @vicgrinberg@mastodon.social and then you have notorious cases like Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered pulsars, but her (male) advisor got the Nobel for it and not her.

  • @vicgrinberg@mastodon.social That's why I didn't even try to study chemistry, even though I was the second best in chemistry in my class at a school focused on nutritional science. (Also, first generation academic who nearly didn't even get to the respective secondary school because my parents as working class didn't fit the bourgeois expectations fitting for this kind of school.) #AcademicChatter #FirstGenerationAcademic #Academic

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social I remember my daughter being told "Physics is hard" by both the male A-level student and the female physics teacher when she was looking around at one particular open day for information on what subjects to take. If you've put people off from even looking at the information, then they aren't signing up later. For balance, there was also one very off-putting graphic design teacher elsewhere who had reduced her to tears with his spiel on "Art is hard," but that was mainly a "Don't go to this particular further education establishment".

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social When I was in school, in the 80s & 90s, one physics teacher separated out the boys and the girls and then taught with his back to the girls.
