If I were doing that today I would be relying on filesharing myself. simply to get my work out there, so as to interest people in live performances in clubs. I'd bypass the record companies that "paid" artists pennies on a ten dollar or more CD in 1990's money, and seed my own torrents. Same idea as publishing free and open source software, which I've also done.
