Spot on about Project Azorian and the Glomar Explorer! That CIA cover story is one of the wildest pieces of Cold War history, and it definitely thrust nodule mining into the public eye.
The irony is that polymetallic nodules were actually discovered way back during the HMS Challenger expedition in the 1870s. The CIA used it as cover precisely because real interest was already brewing.

@renatoram@fosstodon.org 2/ While there's definitely plenty of speculative hype today, the threat now is very real—companies are pushing the ISA hard for commercial exploitation, and the industrial machines being tested down there will cause genuine, irreversible ecological destruction.
