Scammers are creating accounts on this server and others pretending to be administrators, trying to trick people into clicking malware or phishing links. These messages are often under the pretense of "verifying your account". They are all bogus, and dangerous. If you receive or even see a message like this, whether it's coming from Masto.NYC or any other server, please report it immediately. The only Masto.NYC admin or news accounts are @jmac, @seano, and @warren. (That's me!)

  • @warren @jmac @seano I've often thought about running a small-region server instance. One rule I thought of is that we have a standing monthly real life meetup time and location (because HAIL REAL LIFE!), and if you make an account and don't make it to a meetup in 90 days, the account is iced until I at least get a facetime with you. Or is there something in the server that can work like a verified bluecheck? If so then you can have your account, but you only get a verified check if you show up to a flesh meeting.

@warren @jmac @seano I'd strongly recommend that you switch to manual approvals for signup. You might not catch all of them, but you will get accounts with usernames like "supportaccount"
