@Gargron@mastodon.social I'm the same, but I still have the phone I bought in 2021 and it still works fine (Android obvs).

@Gargron@mastodon.social just buy the two-grand phone and never unfold it.

With features like Live Rewind and Reference image and more client side scanning happening...when my devices die I'm gonna move to linux and alternatives for sure. Maybe its time to move to a flip phone and tiny tablet combo.

@Gargron@mastodon.social I have my iPhone 12 mini and I can’t see anything that entices me to move past that because it actually works, I dread every update

@Gargron@mastodon.social While we're at it can we *please* have easily replaceable batteries, a headphone jack, and a microsd card slot? Every new phone I get is worse than the old one and I hate it :(

@Gargron@mastodon.social I want to go back to my Nokia 6160. Answer phone calls, and play snake. I don’t want what they are selling anymore. Let me off this roller coaster.

@Gargron@mastodon.social capitalism means your device must eventually fail so they can keep selling you new ones. Capitalism is for the rich, not consumers.

@Gargron@mastodon.social Did you try the ios 27 beta at all? It runs smoother (or at least more consistently) on my old iPhone 11 Pro that I’ve been using for testing than iOS 26 did on an iPhone 17, to the point where I was seriously considering going back to the older phone. Feels like Apple assigned someone to work on optimization for the first time in years.

@Gargron@mastodon.social So don’t buy a foldable phone and don’t install the OS version with Liquid Glass. Easy.

@Gargron@mastodon.social ok, that might be iPhone 17e I would say. They didn’t stop it producing right. I can imagine I would love the foldable design, used loved Blackberry Passport (similar size, most likely best phone I ever had) I can imagine this duo as phone and tablet in one, however the price is just insane. So I can live without it.

@Gargron@mastodon.social Good thing is, that iOS 27 fixes most of it. Have a 2020 SE, that was unusable with 26. Installed the first beta of 27 and it was much better. With the 27 RC it feels like 18.

@Gargron@mastodon.social My single biggest frustration is being forced into using a "smart" phone because "the only way to interact with [insert_company_here] is via our mobile app". Why cant I stick to my nokia 3310? Why can they make their apps work on GrapheneOS. Yes BNI, im pointing at you....

@Gargron@mastodon.social The only reason I slightly paid attention to this is that wider rather than higher might be of benefit. I'm always dropping my phone because it's top heavy the way I hold it and with case. BUT I had been planning to make it last until it died. I kept my former phone until the battery started to act up, my broker said it would no longer allow me to log in with my DATED phone, and I was a bit afraid it would set the house on fire it got so hot. :) My current phone is about 3 years old.

@Gargron@mastodon.social While it may not work flawlessly on day one, there's a type of phone that only gets better with age, Linux mobile. Best bet would be to support relevant projects: @dawndrums@mastodon.social DivineD, @mechasystems@fosstodon.org Comet, @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems, @phosh@social.phosh.mobi UI, @purism@social.librem.one Librem5v2, #Librephone project by @fsf@hostux.social, etc. #gnuLinux #LinuxMobile #MobileLinux #DivineD #Librem5Fir #Librem5v2 #Librem5 #LibertyPhone #Pinephone #MechaComet #FreeSoftware #OpenHardware
