@MostlyTato@mstdn.social We've lived here for 20+ years. The first 10 we saw grass snake every few years, not more than 3 times.
Then we built the large wildlife pond. It's purpose built for newts and grass snakes. Since then we have them every year in summer.
Additionally, we put down lots of dead wood and heaps of stone as hides for both newts and snakes for the winter.
We feel extremely privileged to have these possibilities and to spend time with all our coresidents.

@feinschmeckergarten@norden.social Lovely pics! I recall from my junior herpetological days that grass snakes weren't distributed in my county. An allotment holder in the back field days he saw one though a few years ago, and he knew what he was looking for too. Maybe the distributions have changed. I do wish I could remember my reference book from when I was a kid.
