First trial install of Xubuntu 26.04 successfully done.
There was no need to change my standard method, so it remains as described in my articles - see https://dev.to/geraldew/running-linux-purely-on-a-usb-drive-3mfg
The steps were:
- Download ISO and make thumb drive
- Go to spare laptop and remove hard drive
- Boot thumb drive
- Plug in target USB SSD drive
- Run installer
- Shutdown remove thumb drive
- Boot on SSD
- Re-install GRUB as removable
- Reboot
- Install rEFInd
Thus making a portable full Linux system.

As I've written in my articles, removing the drive in the machine used for the build process avoids the need for any special settings in any of: - the target install process; - the GRUB re-installation; - the addition of rEFInd I know I'm lucky that my older laptop lets me easily unplug its internal drive - unlike my newer one for which the dismantling required is formidable. Still, such is only necessary to make these setups, which can then be used on any stock computer with USB booting.
